Moon Jae-in’s Revenge(3) – US OBSERVERS

During his five-year tenure, Roh Moo-hyun’s road to the presidency was difficult. During this period, Moon Jae-in entered and left the Blue House three times, and has been silently supporting Roh Moo-hyun behind his back, which also earned him the title of Roh Moo-hyun’s shadow. But when the opposition united to impeach Roh Moo-hyun, Moon Jae-in ran around and formed a strong line of lawyers to defend Roh Moo-hyun. He even took his wife to participate in a candlelight rally that bounced back and walked with thousands of ordinary people. All this finally allowed Roh Moo-hyun to resume his presidency. However, the president of South Korea only has a five-year term. Roh Moo-hyun wants to solve too many problems, and he is limited by himself and the times. He always has more than enough energy and his approval rate has also been low in the late ruling period. The ambition that was once turned into a tragedy of idealism.

On February 25, 2008, after a bumpy five-year presidential career, Roh Moo-hyun’s term ended and bid farewell to the Blue House. That day, Moon Jae-in finally relieved. Sitting in his office, he just wanted to stay away from the world and live quietly. After retiring, Roh Moo-hyun and Moon Jae-in chose to go back to the country and live in seclusion between mountains and rivers. They live close to each other. The two people often visit each other. Roh Moo-hyun is also a farmer and likes to work in his own fields. But this peaceful life was finally ruthlessly broken. After the new president Lee Myung-bak took office, he immediately began to liquidate Roh Moo-hyun. Before entering politics, Lee Myung-bak was the president of Hyundai Group, representing the interests of the South Korean chaebol. The South Korean chaebols, who have suffered from Roh Moo-hyun, hope to use Roh Moo-hyun to deter those who are disadvantageous to them in the political circle. They first arrested a large number of former government officials related to Roh Moo-hyun, collected evidence, and accused Roh Moo-hyun of taking a copy of his files after retirement. At that time, South Korean law stipulated that the president could not take away his files. They used this to make a fuss and further expand the scope of the investigation. Many of Roh Moo-hyun’s friends, colleagues, and relatives were taken away for investigation, which puts Roh Moo-hyun under tremendous mental pressure. Later, they investigated that Roh Moo-hyun’s brother and his wife had taken 6 million US dollars in bribes. Although they had no evidence to prove that Roh Moo-hyun took bribes, the news of the bribery of his relatives made Roh Moo-hyun very passive in public opinion. The media swarmed and began to fabricate various malicious rumors, which eventually made Roh Moo-hyun overwhelmed and committed suicide by jumping off a cliff.

In fact, as for Roh Moo-hyun’s situation, even if he was convicted, he would spend a few years in jail at most, but he refused the human trial in a way of death, and left everything to history for evaluation. After Roh Moo-hyun’s death, Moon Jae-in was in grief, but he couldn’t be alone or cry, because he was chosen as the bereaved master and had to preside over Roh Moo-hyun’s funeral. At the funeral, Lee Myung-bak also came, and a member of the assembly could not help shouting at Lee Myung-bak, “Political revenge! Apologize!” Moon Jae-in had to apologize to Lee Myung-bak as the bereaver. Imagine Moon Jae-in’s mood at the time, but he lowered his head and said, “We were rude.” Lee Myung-bak pretended to be indifferent and replied, “It’s okay, I can understand.” As soon as he turned his head, Lee Myung-bak made the prosecutor file a lawsuit against that member of the council for obstructing the funeral. The two things Lee Myung-bak likes to criticize most about Roh Moo-hyun are that his relatives took bribes of US$6 million, and the attack on big chaebols led to the slow growth of South Korea’s economy. But when it was Lee Myung-bak’s turn to become president, GDP growth was not as fast as Roh Moo-hyun’s, and he was later found to have taken 40 million US dollars in bribes.

Moon Jae-in used to think that he would grow old in the country and stay away from world affairs. On May 23, 2009, Roh Moo-hyun died. On that day, his body disappeared under the cliff of Owl Rock, but his shadow came out of the darkness. In 2012, Moon Jae-in came out of the mountain and was elected as the 19th member of the National Assembly. He immediately announced his candidacy for President of South Korea and became Park Geun-hye’s biggest competitor. Park Geun-hye’s father was Park Jung-hee, who was liquidated by Roh Moo-hyun. When Roh Moo-hyun was in office, Park Geun-hye was the leader of the opposition party, and Lee Myung-bak was also a member of this party. The two sides could be described as antagonistic and long-standing grievances. In the end, Moon Jae-in lost to Park Geun-hye by a small margin. In October 2016, the “Girlfriends Gate” incident broke out. Park Geun-hye’s cronies, Cui Soon-sil, were exposed to long-term bribes from chaebols and interfered with Park Geun-hye’s governance. There was a nationwide uproar in South Korea and many protest marches broke out. This caused Park Geun-hye’s approval rate to plummet and impeachment to Congress.
In November 2016, in Gwanghwamun, Moon Jae-in stood among the protesters against Park Geun-hye holding a candlelight. He was 63 years old and his hair was gray, but he still stood there, with the word “revenge” on his face. On March 10, 2017, the Korean Constitutional Court ruled that the impeachment was established, and Park Geun-hye became the first South Korean president to step down due to impeachment in history. A month later, Moon Jae-in ran for the president of South Korea again. His political views were very popular among civilians and young people, and his support rate was very high. He was elected president of South Korea. After being elected, Moon Jae-in always carried a piece of paper with him. It was Roh Moo-hyun’s suicide note. “There is no other reason, just can’t be thrown away.” On May 23, 2017, Park Geun-hye appeared in court for trial. On May 23, 2018, Lee Myung-bak appeared in court for trial. May 23 is Roh Moo-hyun’s death day. Moon Jae-in not only avenged Roh Moo-hyun, but also inherited Roh’s political ideals. He continued to fight against South Korean chaebols and continued to suppress the privileged class. In terms of political skills, he is more flexible than Roh Moo-hyun. After he was elected, he also visited the cemetery of Lee Seung-man and Park Jung-hee in order to seek cross-party cooperation.

In this epidemic, he took swift and decisive measures and successfully contained the epidemic. In the congressional election just concluded, his party won 60% of the seats in one fell swoop, setting a historic record. The scholar died for his confidant, and Moon Jae-in entered the Korean political arena with a mortal determination, and finally broke into a world. Roh Moo-hyun likes the concept of river water very much. He hopes that people can gather together and rush into the sea no matter what setbacks they encounter, just like river water.
